Keyed to Differ (KD)

When padlocks are all keyed to differ, it means that a unique key operates each lock. Every padlock will have its unique combination and therefore will only be operated by its corresponding key. A key used at one lock cannot be used to open any other lock. Keyed to Differ is the most common keying system for LOTO padlocks as it is the safest and conforms to the One Employee, One Lock, One key theory.

Keyed Alike (KA)

When padlocks are all keyed alike, it means that the same key operates every padlock. A single combination will be used for every padlock, meaning one key will operate every cylinder/plug. This is useful in a space where a limited number of keys is required or where multiple objects need to be locked by the same person.

Mastered Keyed(MK)

When a padlock is master keyed, it means that each padlock has its unique key that only opens that padlock, but there is a Master Key which can open every padlock in the system. The individual padlocks can be a mix of KD and KA padlocks. The Master Key is usually issued to a supervisor or business owner, allowing he/she to open any lock they choose.

Grand Mastered Keyed(GMK)

A Grand Master Key System is a master key system using three or more levels of keys to control access to a property or series of lockouts. The Grand Master key is the highest-ranked ranked in the system and can open all locks in the system unless otherwise specified. The GMK is usually issued to a supervisor to manager, and the Sub Master Keys are issued to section managers or department supervisors.
